20 Things Men Do In Their 40s That Will Hurt Them In Their 60s

20 Things Men Do In Their 40s That Will Hurt Them In Their 60s

Your 40s Set the Tone

Your 40s can feel like the time when you’re experienced enough to know better but busy enough to ignore half of what you know. We get it! But the thing is, the habits that seem harmless now can become much bigger problems in your 60s. Before you run into a serious wall a few years from now, let’s go over the very habits that you should aim to stop doing today.

1. Delaying Exercise

If you only move hard on Saturday and spend the rest of the week parked at a desk, your body will eventually display that neglect. In your 60s, that pattern can show up as weaker legs, poorer balance, and less stamina for everyday things. A better move is to build in regular walking, strength training, and mobility work throughout the week.

2. Ignoring Strength Training

Speaking of working out, we all know that women should aim for strength training, but men’s bones need just as much care! When you don’t work out your muscles, by your 60s, that move can make getting out of low chairs, protecting joints, and staying independent harder than it needs to be. Two days a week of simple strength work wouldn’t go amiss.

3. Leaving Blood Pressure on the Back Burner

High blood pressure is easy to overlook, even in your 40s, but that’s exactly why you should keep a closer eye on it. If you don’t check it in your 40s, you can spend years quietly putting extra strain on your heart, brain, kidneys, and blood vessels.

4. Wolfing Down Like Every Meal

We’re not saying that you have to swear off burgers and fries altogether, but after 40, those foods become less forgiving. By your 60s, years of oversized portions and low-fiber meals can contribute to weight gain and blood sugar problems (among other things), so don’t be afraid to work in some vegetables, lean proteins, and nuts more often.

5. Treating Sleep Like an Afterthought

We can’t harp enough about how important a good night’s sleep is, especially as you age! Poor sleep in your 40s can make everything from weight management and mood to focus and blood pressure harder to handle later.

6. Drinking Like Recovery Still Works Quickly

Drinks that felt harmless at 28 hit differently when you’re 45—and have a Monday meeting at 8:30. Over time, excessive alcohol can raise the risk of injuries, liver problems, and even mental health struggles. Weeknight drinking isn’t exactly an issue when you alternate with water and know your limits.

7. Smoking or Vaping

Smoking isn’t a personality quirk, and vaping isn’t its harmless cousin! Tobacco use is linked to all kinds of serious health problems, so if you’re still smoking in your 40s, quitting is one of the most direct ways to help the man you’ll be in your 60s.

8. Skipping Preventive Screenings

You feel healthy as a horse, so why go to the doctor? It’s a common sentiment a lot of men have, but screening starts at 45 for average-risk adults, so when you ignore them, you never really see what’s going on under the hood. It’s much better to find small problems early than to meet them years later.

9. Brushing Off Back Pain

Back pain isn’t a funny inconvenience to blame on old age. If you ignore weak hips, poor posture, or bad lifting habits in your 40s, your 60s will likely involve more appointments. It can also mean fewer activities you enjoy.

10. Letting Your Waistline Creep Up

Weight gain is never fun to notice or talk about, but a few extra pounds can make check-ins like sleep apnea and joint stress harder to manage as you age. Do yourself a favor and work with your doctor to stick with a clean diet and proper workout regimen; your 60-year-old self will thank you!

11. Treating Mental Health Like a Private Struggle

Mental health struggles can be easy to hide for a while, but if you never deal with them in your 40s, they can strain not only your health, but also your relationships’ health long before your 60s arrive. Talking to a therapist or being honest with your doctor isn’t weakness; it’s basic care.

12. Letting Friendships Fade

Men need friends just as much as anyone else, and yet, many of them lose touch with friends in their 40s. By their 60s, that drift can turn into social isolation, which has been linked with higher risks for heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. Text the old friend!

13. Using Work as an Excuse

Working hard can be admirable, don’t get us wrong, but it isn’t your get out of jail free card. In your 60s, the promotion you chased won’t feel as rewarding if your knees hurt, your relationships are thin, and your energy is gone by dinner.

14. Sitting for Most of the Day

You ought to know by your 40s that a long commute or a desk job will be bad for your health. Even if you exercise, spending most of your waking hours seated only works against you over time. Do yourself a favor: set a timer and carve out a few minutes of movement between tasks.

15. Ignoring Oral Health

Your 60-year-old self is begging you to pick up that floss! Oral health is no joke, and even if you neglected that stuff as a kid, there’s no excuse to keep ignoring basic habits now. Brushing, flossing, and getting cleanings aren’t exactly glamorous—but neither is explaining that smell when you open your mouth.

16. Putting Up With Stress

The sad reality is that a lot of men just put up with everyday stress, even when it hurts them. Well, now it’s the time for stoicism. Chronic stress can crush an otherwise healthy body and mind, so try a real decompression routine.

17. Avoiding the Doctor

Remember what we said about screenings? We hate to tell you, but annual check-ups are part of that! Seeing a primary care doctor regularly in your 40s gives you a baseline, so your 60-year-old self isn’t dealing with the health conversation from scratch.

18. Eating Too Little Protein

Men often focus on cutting calories but forget that preserving muscle needs attention, too. Without proper guidance from a licensed professional, your body may not be getting enough support for strength and recovery. Add practical protein sources like eggs, fish, lentils, or cottage cheese to your diet.

19. Acting Like Balance Is Only for Older People

Balance training sounds pretty useless at first…until one icy sidewalk wipes you out. If you never practice stability in your 40s, your 60s will only come with more falls and less confidence moving around. Single-leg stands or even controlled lunges are usually good places to start.

20. Waiting for a Health Scare

The most expensive habit in your 40s is assuming you’ll fix everything later. Bust out of that habit! With that mentality, “later” arrives with more medications, less flexibility, and more time with a doctor. Starting with one change this week ensures your future self won’t hold any foolish choices against you.
