Your Body Knows
Your body is constantly collecting information about what’s happening around you, even when you aren't consciously paying attention to it. Some of these signals are obvious, while others involve specialized cells and nervous-system pathways that detect things like acceleration, internal pressure, temperature, and changes in your surroundings. You might not think of these abilities as separate senses, but they help you move, balance, react, and understand what’s happening.
1. Your Body Can Sense Acceleration
Your inner ear contains structures that detect changes in the movement of your head. Fluid and tiny sensory structures within respond when you accelerate, decelerate, or change direction. That’s how you know the elevator is moving even if you’re facing the inside wall and can’t see the numbers.
2. You Can Sense Which Way Is Up
The vestibular system also provides information that helps your brain determine where your body is oriented in relation to gravity. Structures called otolith organs have small calcium carbonate crystals that shift when your head tilts or moves. This information helps you stay upright without having to consciously think about where the ground is.
3. Your Body Detects Blood Pressure Changes
Changes in blood pressure cause certain blood vessels to stretch, which is sensed by specialized receptors called baroreceptors. They provide your brain with information that can help regulate heart rate and activity in blood vessels. You usually don't notice this process, but it's working whenever your body adjusts after you stand up, exercise, or rest.
4. You Can Sense Your Own Heartbeat
Information from your heart and surrounding tissues can make you aware of your own heartbeat. It’s one example of interoception, which refers to how the nervous system senses and processes information about what’s going on inside your body. For reasons that aren’t fully understood, people can vary in how strongly they perceive their own heartbeat.
5. Your Body Knows When Your Bladder Is Filling
As your bladder fills, its walls stretch and specialized sensory pathways send information to your nervous system. Your brain interprets those signals as the increasingly familiar urge to urinate. The sensation gradually becomes stronger because your nervous system is keeping track of how full the bladder has become.
6. You Can Sense When Your Stomach Is Full
Your stomach has stretch receptors that respond when its walls expand as you eat. Digestive system signals travel through nerves and other structures to brain areas that help regulate appetite and fullness. That’s why your body can signal you to stop eating even before you’ve consciously processed how much food you’ve had.
7. Your Body Detects Changes In Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide levels are closely monitored by your nervous system because they influence blood acidity. Specialized sensors detect changes in carbon dioxide levels and contribute to the regulation of your breathing. When carbon dioxide levels increase, your brain normally increases your need to breathe.

8. You Can Sense Temperature Without Touching Something
You have specialized nerve endings in your skin that detect cooling and warming. By comparing the activity in these nerves, your nervous system can sense hot and cold. You don’t actually need to touch something to register its temperature if the heat or coldness can reach your skin.
9. Your Body Can Detect Tissue Damage
Pain happens when specialized sensory neurons called nociceptors detect possible mechanical, thermal, or chemical damage. These nerves send signals through your nervous system, resulting in the pain response. Pain makes you want to withdraw from the source of the problem.
10. You Can Sense Your Muscles Stretching
Muscle spindles are sensory receptors within your muscles that primarily detect changes in the length of your muscles. They continually provide your nervous system with information about your muscles. This helps your brain coordinate your movements and maintain your posture.
11. Your Tendons Tell Your Brain About Force
Golgi tendon organs are sensory receptors located in your tendons that detect changes in muscle tension. Signals from the receptors provide your nervous system with information about muscle force. This contributes to the precise control of movement, especially when you're lifting, gripping, or adjusting how strongly you move.
12. Your Body Can Sense Itchy Irritation
Scientists now believe itch is mediated by specialized sensory pathways rather than being a lesser form of pain. Some nerve fibers respond to itch-causing substances and stimuli by sending signals into the nervous system. The resulting urge to scratch is a remarkably specific response that can occur even when there isn't an obvious injury.
13. You Can Sense Hunger Before Your Stomach Is Empty
Your brain receives information about hunger that goes beyond the amount of food in your stomach. Hormones, nutrient levels, the digestive tract, and other factors send signals to areas of your brain involved in appetite regulation. Your brain can tell you’re hungry before your stomach is completely empty.
14. Your Body Notices Changes In Blood Chemistry
Sensors throughout your body monitor important aspects of your internal chemistry, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, and acidity. Included among these are oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, as well as acidity. Your nervous system uses the information to help regulate activities such as breathing and blood circulation.
15. You Can Sense Your Joints' Position
Closing your eyes doesn’t mean you suddenly don’t know where your limbs are. Proprioception is your body’s ability to sense the positioning of your muscles, tendons, and joints. Your brain combines information from these areas to keep track of where your body parts are positioned.
16. Your Body Detects Vibration
Certain skin sensory receptors are especially tuned to vibration and rapid changes in pressure. They allow you to sense such things as a vibrating phone, surface, or someone tapping quickly against your skin. Your brain can process these signals quickly enough that you can distinguish vibration from a simple, steady touch.
17. You Can Sense Air Movement On Your Skin
Your skin also has receptors that respond to mechanical forces like things moving across your skin. A breeze can create a distinct sensation on your skin even if the air temperature isn’t greatly different from before the breeze started.
18. Your Body Can Sense Stretching Inside Your Lungs
Your lungs and respiratory system contain sensory capabilities that provide your brain with information about lung inflation and breathing. Respiratory activity is regulated in part by this information, along with other influences. You don’t normally notice your individual breaths, but you become aware of your breathing when you take a deep breath.
19. Your Body Can Detect Low Oxygen
Your body has specialized chemoreceptors that can sense decreases in the amount of oxygen carried in arterial blood. These sensors contribute to breathing and cardiovascular responses if oxygen availability drops. At high altitude, for example, reduced oxygen availability contributes to increased breathing as your body attempts to compensate.
20. You Can Sense Your Own Movement With Your Eyes Closed
When you move your body, your brain integrates information from your vestibular system, muscles, joints, and skin. It allows your nervous system to keep track of your body’s movements as you perform complicated tasks without having to constantly monitor your progress. This lets you perform many movements without relying on your vision to monitor every part of the process.
