10 Places You'll Always Get Sick & 10 Places You Rarely Will

10 Places You'll Always Get Sick & 10 Places You Rarely Will

Why Germs Seem to Follow You Everywhere

Some places just seem designed to test your immune system, even when they look perfectly harmless at first glance. Between crowded spaces, recycled air, and people who swear they’re “not contagious anymore,” it’s easy to see why certain spots leave you reaching for tissues a few days later. Don’t worry, you’re not alone, and that’s why we’re here to break down which spots are cesspools for germs and which ones rarely get people sick.

1. Airports

Well, this one’s a no-brainer! Airports bring together people from everywhere, which means they also bring together plenty of coughs, sneezes, and mysterious germs. You’re also touching all kinds of surfaces, like kiosks, bins, armrests, bathroom doors, and tray tables, before you even make it to your destination. Add in stress and a lack of sleep, and your immune system doesn’t exactly get to relax.

2. Public Transportation

Buses, trains, and subways are always full of surfaces that thousands of hands touch every day. Not to mention, when you’re packed close to strangers during rush hour, someone’s cough can become everyone’s problem very quickly.

3. Gyms

We all know that you’re supposed to wipe down equipment. We also know you should stay home when you’re sick. But that doesn’t mean others will. Sweat-covered equipment, shared mats, locker rooms, and water fountains can all hold onto bacteria and viruses if they aren’t cleaned well.

4. Schools

There’s a reason parents are always under the weather! Schools are busy, social places where germs have endless opportunities to move from one person to another. Even adults who work in schools find themselves catching whatever illness makes the rounds that week.

5. Daycare Centers

Oh, you thought schools were bad? Say hello to daycare centers, spots that are full of young children still learning basic hygiene—making them especially active spots for illness. Little hands touch everything, and those same hands often end up near mouths, noses, and eyes.

6. Doctor’s Offices

We’d all love to think that doctors’ offices are clean, but they’re really places where people go when they don’t feel well. So, germs are part of the experience. Chairs, clipboards, pens, door handles, and check-in screens also get plenty of contact throughout the day, and you’ll likely touch one of them.

7. Restaurants

Like it or not, restaurants expose you to germs in ways that aren’t always obvious, especially when menus, condiment bottles, and payment tablets are shared across tables. Food safety matters too, since undercooked meals or poor handling can lead to stomach trouble that ruins more than just dinner.

8. Offices

The office is another one of those spots sick people should avoid…but never do! Shared keyboards, phones, coffee machines, conference tables, and elevator buttons all work together to help germs travel through the workday. When you combine close contact with long hours together, it’s easy for a small sniffle to become a team-wide event.

9. Hotels

A good hotel will always clean up after the last person, but that doesn’t mean every location treats germs the same way. High-traffic items, like remote controls, light switches, elevator buttons, faucets, and bedside tables, can be touched by many people before you arrive.

10. Concerts

Concerts pack large crowds into loud, exciting spaces—ones where personal distance tends to disappear. People are cheering, singing, and touching shared railings throughout the event, too, which means you could easily catch something. And let’s be honest, even if someone’s sick, they probably won’t sacrifice the experience.

Don’t worry, we have good news! With a little common sense and decent hand hygiene, you can still enjoy some places without wondering what your throat will feel like tomorrow. Let’s dive into a few spots that aren’t little ecosystems for bacteria.

1. Botanical Gardens

Botanical gardens give you plenty of room to wander without being pressed against strangers. Since much of the experience happens outdoors or in airy greenhouses, you’re less likely to sit in stale indoor air for long periods, too. Yes, you’ll still touch the occasional railing, but the setting is pleasantly low-risk.

2. Bookstores

As if we needed another reason to remind you of a book’s wonder! Bookstores are generally quiet places where people browse at their own pace. Most visitors aren’t handling the same item repeatedly, either, so you can keep a comfortable distance without making it awkward.

3. Art Galleries

Art galleries often have controlled entry and clean interiors, which is already a big enough win. However, they also have enough open floor space to keep visitors moving smoothly. Since people are only looking, not touching, there aren’t as many shared surfaces involved in the experience, either.

4. Private Gardens

Private gardens are peaceful, personal spaces where crowds are naturally limited. You’re usually only around familiar people in an environment that isn’t being handled by hundreds of visitors each day. You can literally stop and smell the roses!

5. Museums

Museums can be especially comfortable when you visit during quieter parts of the day—and it’s worth considering before your next outing. Fewer visitors mean fewer close interactions, shorter lines, and less competition for buttons, handles, and interactive displays.

6. Nature Trails

The ol’ dusty trail spreads people out naturally, which reduces any close contact that helps spread illness. You’re also in the fresh air, moving at your own pace, and usually touching very little beyond what belongs to you.

7. Libraries

Sorry, we’re back to books again! Libraries with strong ventilation and steady cleaning routines can be surprisingly safe—so long as you aren’t there during peak children’s hours. People also stay in their own spaces and settle into activities that don’t require much contact with others.

8. Farmers’ Markets

Outdoor farmers' markets give you the benefit of fresh air and quick, casual interactions. So, talk about a win-win for your immune system! As long as you clean your produce properly at home, a day picking fruit is more likely to fill your kitchen than your medicine cabinet.

9. Outdoor Sculpture Parks

Outdoor sculpture parks combine open space with a low-touch experience, which makes them a perfect choice when you want to get out. You can enjoy the art and the fresh air without turning the day into a germ-management project, too, so don’t be afraid to pencil an outing into your calendar.

10. Your Own Patio

There’s nothing like enjoying a cup of joe on your own patio! Best of all, since you control the space, the furniture, and who comes by, fewer surprises are waiting on the surfaces around you. It’s not the most adventurous destination, but it’s a reliable place to relax.
