Things Become Clear With Time
Your 20s can feel like they last forever, which makes it easy to assume there's plenty of time to do everything later. Once people reach their 40s, however, they often look back and realize that certain opportunities, habits, and experiences were easier to pursue when they were younger. Not every regret is about making a huge life decision, either, because some of the most common ones involve simple things that seemed unimportant at the time.

1. Traveling More
For some people, their twenties feel like the carefree time they expected. However, many people realize in hindsight they had more free time and fewer responsibilities than they appreciated. You don’t have to travel internationally or spend a lot of money, either.
2. Saving Money Earlier
When you first start your career, it can seem impossible to worry about retirement. However, many people wish they’d started saving at least a little bit as early as possible instead of assuming they would have plenty of time to catch up later. Your money will have more time to grow, and you’ll learn how to live below your means.
3. Taking Better Care of Their Teeth
Dental health can seem mundane when you’re younger, but neglecting it can end up costing you. Keeping up with cleanings, brushing and flossing daily, and taking care of problems before they become serious will benefit you for years to come. Many adults regret not thinking about their teeth as long-term investments earlier on.
4. Learning to Cook
Ordering takeout is quick and easy, especially when you’re busy working. However, relying on it for years can become costly and restrictive. Learning how to make a few staple meals will give you a lifelong skill that will serve you no matter where you are.
5. Spending More Time With Parents
It can seem like your parents will always be there when you’re younger. Because of this, you might not think about spending quality time with them. As your parents get older, you’ll wish you took more time to listen to advice, learn about their past, and create more memories.
6. Building Strong Friendships
Making friends may be easy when you’re surrounded by classmates and coworkers. Maintaining them is what many people end up regretting when they allow themselves to drift away. Investing the time and effort into having a few strong friendships can help you find support and companionship long after you leave your twenties.
7. Taking More Career Risks
Your first job does not have to be what you do for the rest of your life. However, many people fall into comfort with a position without trying something new that they may enjoy more. They look back in their 40s and wish they would have taken a chance on something new, switched careers, or applied to positions they thought they weren’t qualified for.
8. Learning Another Language
Learning a new language will take time, patience, and dedication. Because of this, it can be easy to put it off for years. Many people wish they started sooner because every travel abroad or even at home, where they hear other languages being spoken.
9. Exercising Consistently
You have to love fitness in your 20s to start taking care of your body. Making exercise a regular part of your life can help you grow accustomed to it instead of trying to start years later. Many people learn the benefits of keeping your strength, mobility, and cardio up as you age.
10. Taking More Photos
While many people take countless pictures these days, that wasn’t always the case. Some people wish they spent more time recording everyday life, friends, family gatherings, travel, and even where they lived. Pictures don’t have to be posed and perfect; sometimes the best ones are total selfies.
11. Saying Yes to More Experiences
While your 20s are a great time to start new things, you don’t have to try everything. However, some people look back and realize they denied themselves experiences due to fear of embarrassment, failure, or what others may think of them. You don’t have to love every experience, but at least you will know you didn’t miss out.

12. Setting Better Boundaries
Being young can make you want to say yes to everything. However, always putting others’ needs before your own can lead to unnecessary stress. Many people learn with age that setting boundaries with coworkers, friends, romantic partners, and family members can help you.
13. Reading More Books
There's always another reason to put off reading, whether it's work, social plans, television, or an endless stream of online content. People often wish they'd spent more time reading for pleasure and learning when they had fewer competing responsibilities. A regular reading habit can expose you to new ideas while giving you a break from the constant noise of everyday life.
14. Pursuing a Creative Hobby
Since hobbies take time, many people assume they’ll get to them later when they’re not busy. The busy times of life don’t always make as much free time as you think. A lot of people wish they never gave up on hobbies like playing music, painting, writing, photography, crafting, or any other interest they had.
15. Taking Their Health Seriously
When you’re young, it can feel like health problems aren’t something you have to worry about yet. Paying attention to your health and creating good habits in your 20s can benefit you later. People often wish they'd taken sleep, nutrition, stress, preventive care, and other basic aspects of well-being more seriously.
16. Spending Less Time Trying to Impress People
Whether it be clothes, accessories, cars, jobs, or wealth, many people try to appear more successful than they really are. Not only can this take a toll on your bank account, but it can also drain your energy. With hindsight, many realize that feeling comfortable with who they are was more valuable than maintaining an impressive image.
17. Learning Basic Financial Skills
While learning to save money is important, understanding budgeting, credit, interest, insurance, taxes, and long-term financial planning can prevent plenty of confusion later. A lot of adults wish they learned the basics before making costly mistakes rather than learning on their own once life became more complicated.
18. Enjoying Their Youth Instead of Rushing Through It
It’s hard not to look at your twenties as one big waiting game. Waiting to finish school, find the perfect job, significant other, house, or lifestyle. When you look back, you’ll wish you enjoyed your youth instead of trying to rush to the next big thing.
19. Keeping a Journal
Writing down your thoughts and experiences may feel silly when you’re younger. Everything seems temporary when you’re young and living in the moment. You’ll wish you wrote down how you felt about certain things, what your goals were, and what life was like day to day.

20. Spending More Time Being Present
Perhaps the biggest regret is simply not paying enough attention to the life that was happening at the time. It's easy to spend your 20s thinking constantly about the future, worrying about mistakes, or comparing your progress with everyone around you. People often realize later that many moments they were desperate to rush through were actually the years they wish they could experience again.
