20 Hobbies That Are Actually Bad For You The Longer You Do Them
Is It Worth the Consequences?
Hobbies are supposed to make life more enjoyable, give you something to look forward to, and help you spend your free time doing something you genuinely like. Still, even harmless-looking pastimes can become less healthy when you spend too much time on them without enough breaks or balance. Repetitive movements, prolonged sitting, excessive screen time, and even certain creative pursuits can take a toll after years of doing them.
1. Gaming
Video games are a great way to relax, unwind, and tell a story with friends. Marathon sessions can cause your body to complain later, however. Sitting for hours on end can contribute to neck, back, and wrist pain, while staring at a screen for too long can cause eye strain.
2. Gardening
Gardening is an excellent way to get outside and move around, but the bending, kneeling, lifting, and digging you do can be tough on your body. Too much time spent bent over your plants can strain your back. Gripping your tools repeatedly can leave your hands and wrists sore.
3. Knitting
Knitting is made up of small, repetitive motions. Hours spent working on the perfect scarf can become surprisingly taxing on your body. Trying to hold your knitting needles for hours at a time may cause stiffness or soreness.

4. Photography
Photography can be more physically demanding than just snapping a picture here and there. Carrying equipment, standing, crouching, or leaning in odd positions to get the perfect shot can be strenuous. A heavy camera bag full of lenses and gear can be awful if you’re lugging it around all day.
5. Playing Musical Instruments
Musicians tend to repeat the same motion over and over while practicing. Thousands of times in some cases. Guitarists, pianists, drummers, and others can run into issues when they play without paying attention to their posture or taking care of their bodies.
6. Painting
Painting seems relaxing, but think about artists leaning over their canvas for hours while keeping the same arm, shoulder, neck, or wrist positions. Doing that frequently can lead to feeling tired and sore. Move your easel or painting station and change positions when you paint for long periods of time.
7. Collecting
Collecting isn’t strenuous or unhealthy by itself, but it can become those things when your hobby begins to consume all your free time, income, or storage space. Large collections can clutter rooms and make them more difficult to use. Trying to find more items to put in your collection can cause stress.
8. Baking
Baking requires lots of standing, stirring, lifting ingredients and containers, measuring, and plenty of cleaning. Doing all that on a regular basis will wear you out! There’s also the temptation to eat finished goods as you work.
9. Birdwatching
Birdwatching gets people outside, which is great, but hardcore bird enthusiasts may stand in one place or walk for several hours each day. Staying completely stationary can make your neck and shoulders sore. Birdwatching for long periods of time can also expose you to the elements and other outdoor irritants.
10. Reading
Reading is one of the quieter hobbies on our list but can cause you neck, shoulder, and back pain if you spend hours reading without taking a break. Holding a book can cause eye fatigue and sore muscles if you don’t have good lighting or keep it too close to your face.
11. Woodworking
Woodworking can be very rewarding but can become exhausting if you do it regularly. Cutting, measuring, sanding, and carving involve repetitive movements. Standing for long periods, dusty environments, and awkward positions can wear your body out.
12. Drawing
Similar to painting or knitting, you can easily get lost in the world of drawing and not realize hours have passed by. Drawing for long periods can tire out your hand and cause neck or shoulder pain from leaning over your sketchpad. Stand up, move around, and take short breaks to keep your body happy.
13. Playing Pool
Chalk up a win for hobbies that are more physical than they appear. Playing pool can have you standing in the same spot or leaning across the table for hours on end. Bending and twisting back to line up your shots can start to hurt after a while.
14. Sewing
Whether you’re sewing clothes or quilting, your hobby is likely requiring you to sit in one spot for long periods. Sewing can cause neck, shoulder, and wrist pain from looking down at your materials and repeatedly moving your hands. Arrange your area so you have good lighting and take breaks to walk around.
15. Model Building
Model building takes patience and focus. The same qualities that cause you to sit over your model for hours on end. Building models can cause you to concentrate for long periods, make repetitive hand movements, and not get up from your seat very often.
16. Watching Movies as a Hobby
There is nothing wrong with watching movies, but if you’re spending several hours sitting in front of the television every day, you may be missing out on other activities. Too much sitting isn’t great for your health. It’s recommended that you get up, move around, and get some fresh air at least every couple of hours.
17. Social Media Browsing
Scrolling social media is easy and relaxing. Before you know it, you’ve spent the last hour browsing when you only intended to check in for a few minutes. Too much screen time isn’t good for your eyes or your sleep schedule.
18. Competitive Sports
Competitive sports are meant to push you, but pushing yourself too hard can lead to overuse injuries. Doing the same sport day in and day out without allowing your body to recover can cause injury. Take rest days and don’t overdo your training.
19. Hiking
Hiking is a great hobby to get outside and stay active. Increasing your hiking distances too quickly or hiking beyond your skill level can leave you feeling wiped out. Try to keep hikes within your ability level and take a day or two to recover when you’ve completed a difficult hike.
20. DIY Home Projects
Doing DIY projects around the house is a great way to save money and learn how to do things yourself. Tackling projects left and right without allowing yourself to rest will drain your mental and physical health. Painting, assembling furniture, and repairing things around the house can be stressful and cause you to do the same motions over and over.
