20 Unhealthiest Dishes To Stop Ordering In Italian Restaurants

20 Unhealthiest Dishes To Stop Ordering In Italian Restaurants

Pasta Night Has a Few Traps

It might not seem like it, but Italian restaurants can absolutely fit into a healthy lifestyle—so long as you’re careful with what you pick. When pasta, cheese, cured meat, and oversized portions all show up on the same plate, trouble brews pretty quickly for your wallet and your gut. You don’t have to stop enjoying Italian food, but if you’re trying to watch calories or blood sugar swings, these are the dishes worth ordering less often.

1. Fettuccine Alfredo

Fettuccine Alfredo is one of those dishes that looks simple enough to trick the average person into thinking it’s healthy. It’s not, though! Restaurant versions come loaded with butter, heavy cream, Parmesan, and a huge bowl of pasta. Add grilled chicken, and it quickly becomes one of the heaviest picks on the menu.

2. Chicken Parmigiana

At the end of the day, we can’t always resist the siren’s song of Chicken Parmigiana, but you might want to resist the urge. Breaded fried chicken, tomato sauce, and melted mozzarella? All with a side of spaghetti? That plate quickly becomes a calorie-heavy dinner.

3. Lasagna Bolognese

Lasagna Bolognese brings together layers of all the good-tasting stuff: pasta, meat sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, and sometimes even béchamel. That doesn’t mean it’s any good for your body, though. All those rich layers stack up before the plate even reaches you, and if the restaurant serves garlic bread on the side, it becomes more of a weekend splurge than a smart regular order.

4. Stuffed Shells

Stuffed shells may look harmless, but they’re packed with ricotta and covered in extra mozzarella. The dish is still mostly refined pasta and cheese, so when you order three or four large shells with bread beforehand, you’ve had a massive meal without much protein or many vegetables.

5. Spaghetti Carbonara

Carbonara is delicious for all the reasons we know and love! It’s rich, salty, and silky…which is exactly the problem. Traditional versions use egg, cheese, cured pork, and pasta, while some restaurants go further and add cream to make it even heavier. Pancetta or guanciale gives it a big flavor boost, but it also raises the saturated fat and sodium.

6. Fried Calamari

Fried calamari gets treated like a light seafood appetizer, but never forget how bad fried foods are for the average diet. Those crisp rings are coated in flour, cooked in oil, and served with creamy aioli or marinara for dipping. Sharing a plate is one thing, but eating most of it before a pasta entrée makes the meal much heavier than planned.

7. Eggplant Parmigiana

Surely eggplant is the healthy choice, right? Well, just wait until it gets breaded, fried, sauced, and buried under cheese! Many restaurant versions also soak up oil during frying, then get layered with mozzarella and served with pasta. Okay, yes, you’re eating a vegetable, but whatever nutrition you were hoping for is out the window.

8. Four-Cheese Pizza

A traditional four-cheese pizza usually includes mozzarella, fontina, ricotta, and Parmesan—hardly good for your health. Stacking multiple cheeses on a refined crust makes the saturated fat climb fast, and if the pie also comes with extra oil, even two slices are like a full meal.

9. Baked Ziti

Baked ziti is basically just a pasta casserole, and it’s as bad for you as it sounds! Restaurant kitchens rarely hold back on the cheese, too, so you’ll see all that mixed with meat sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan before it’s baked. It’s satisfying, but the refined carbs and rich dairy also make it an unwise choice.

10. Penne Alla Vodka With Sausage

Penne alla vodka already has cream, cheese, and pasta working against you, but things only escalate when sausage enters the picture. Once Italian sausage is added, the dish picks up extra saturated fat, sodium, and calories. It may look lighter than Alfredo, but that doesn’t make it a health-friendly order.

11. Veal Parmigiana

Veal Parmigiana follows the same heavy formula as chicken Parmigiana, only with a richer cut of meat. Don’t be fooled by the thinner cut, either! The veal is usually breaded and fried, then topped with tomato sauce and melted cheese. Paired with pasta, it becomes one of those oversized plates that turns dinner into a sodium and calorie overload.

12. Tortellini Alla Panna

With tortellini alla panna, all you’re really getting is cheese-filled pasta swimming in cream sauce. Good for the stomach, not so good for your health! Some versions even add ham or mushrooms, though the real issue is still the rich sauce and stuffed pasta together.

13. Gnocchi With Gorgonzola Sauce

Gnocchi is already surprisingly heavy, but things only get worse when it’s covered in Gorgonzola sauce. The soft potato dumplings are dense enough as is, and all that sauce adds a fatty richness that doesn’t need much to feel filling. Order it as a main, and you just end up with a plate that’s low on vegetables but high on heaviness.

14. Meat Lover’s Pizza

Well, we all know where this is going! Pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ham, and meatballs on the same crust? We hope you packed some antacids. That combination gives you plenty of protein, but it also packs in processed meats, sodium, and saturated fat.

15. Truffle Risotto

Risotto already gets its creamy texture from slow-cooked rice, butter, cheese, and broth. That means when a restaurant adds truffles or mascarpone, the dish becomes much richer. It may feel refined, but nutritionally it can land closer to a creamy pasta than a lighter rice dish.

16. Antipasto With Cured Meats

Don’t forget that antipasto often tricks you! It may look small, but many versions come piled with salami, prosciutto, provolone, olives, marinated vegetables, and oily dressing. You’ll get some greens, but you have to dig through a lot of cured meats and cheese to find them.

17. Garlic Knots

Garlic knots are easy to underestimate, but you might want to reconsider next time you’re out. They’re usually made from white dough brushed with butter or oil, garlic, herbs, and sometimes Parmesan. Eat a few before pasta, and you’ve added an extra round of refined carbs and fat.

18. Chicken Marsala

Restaurant versions of chicken marsala can still be surprisingly rich, so don’t assume it’s a lighter option. The sauce often uses butter, wine, and sometimes cream, then the chicken is served with pasta or mashed potatoes. It’s not the worst dish on the menu, but it’s not as lean as the name may suggest either.

19. Sausage and Peppers Hero

A sausage and peppers hero is built around a salty, fatty sausage link…which isn’t exactly what you want. Add melted provolone and a large white roll, and the meal becomes much heavier than it needs to be. It’s especially sneaky, too, because it feels more casual than pasta, even though it’s just as indulgent.

20. Tiramisu

Ah, we close with everyone’s favorite coffee-flavored treat! We hate to break it to you, but mascarpone, sugar, espresso-soaked ladyfingers, and cocoa aren’t very good for your heart. The portion may look delicate, but the dessert is still dense with cream and refined carbs.
