Your Fellow Gym-Goers Definitely Notice
The gym is a shared community space where everyone is just trying to better themselves, but sometimes it feels like a few people forgot they aren't in their own private garage. You might be focused on your personal records and your favorite playlist, but your habits could be sending a message that your time is more valuable than everyone else's. While it's easy to get caught up in the zone, maintaining a little self-awareness ensures that you don't become the person everyone secretly rolls their eyes at near the water fountain.
1. The Multi-Machine Monopoly
Claiming three different pieces of equipment at once for a circuit training session is a surefire way to frustrate your fellow gym-goers. You might feel like your heart rate depends on that specific order, but blocking others from using popular machines during peak hours feels very selfish. It’s better to stick to one station at a time or offer to let people work in between your sets.
2. Hovering With Intent
Hovering two feet away from someone until they complete their set is extremely rude and makes them feel rushed. You may think you’re simply being proactive by waiting your turn. But it sends the message that you want them to hurry up.
3. Using the Bench as a Locker
Although the weight bench is there to lift weights on, some people use it as their own personal table for their bag, keys, and gallon jug of water. Not only does it take up space on the equipment when someone else is waiting for you to finish your set, but it signals that you think you own that section of the gym.
4. Phonework Instead of Footwork
Planting yourself on the popular leg press for 10 minutes so you can catch up on Instagram stories is extremely annoying. While you may need downtime between your sets, you shouldn’t use that time to read tweets or catch up on your emails while others are waiting for you to finish.
5. Excessive Grunting for Attention
While a little bit of noise is natural during a heavy lift, screaming at the top of your lungs for every single rep feels like a performance rather than a workout. You might believe it helps your power, but it often serves as a way to force everyone in the room to acknowledge how hard you’re working. Most people find the theatricality distracting and a bit over-the-top for a public setting.
6. Leaving a Trail of Weights
Neglecting to put your weights back after your sets is lazy and makes the next person lift for you. While you may be too tired to put the plates away, expecting others or the janitorial staff to clean up after you is incredibly inconsiderate. All it takes is an extra minute of your time to properly re-rack your weights.
7. Mirror Blocking
Looking at your form in the mirror has become less about technique and more about blocking someone else’s path. You may need to move in front of them to access the rack. But telling someone you’re working out around to “wait up” isn’t polite.
8. The Unsolicited Advice Specialist
Offering unsolicited information to strangers about how they can improve their workouts can really annoy those around you. You may think you’re helping them. But nobody likes being told how to improve their exercises unless they ask for help.

9. Reserved Seating With Towels
Draping a towel over a machine and then walking across the gym to talk to a friend is a frustrating way to hold space you aren't actually using. You’re essentially telling everyone else that the equipment is yours, even when you’re nowhere near it. If you aren't actively sitting on the seat or standing at the rack, it should be fair game for the next person in line.
10. Ignoring the Wipe-Down Rule
Not taking a paper towel to wipe down a bench after your sweaty set shows others that you don’t care about hygiene. You don’t like sitting in someone else’s sweat, so why would you think someone else would like to sit in yours? Wiping down your equipment is common courtesy and should take you less than 10 seconds.
11. Demanding the Music Change
Demanding that the gym blast your desired music genre through the front desk is extremely presumptuous. Instead of being so entitled, you should realize that a gym tries to play music that everyone can listen to while they work out. If you don’t like what’s playing, grab a pair of headphones instead.
12. The Dumbbell Rack Camper
Doing curls in front of the dumbbell rack prevents everyone behind you from getting to the weights they need. Move a few steps back to allow the entire rack of weights to be accessible for others. By staying directly in front of the dumbbells, you’re implying that only you need to get to them and nobody else.
13. Taking Long Phone Calls on Speaker
Talking on your phone loudly for everyone to hear overloads those trying to focus on their workouts. You may think you’re living your best life multitasking in the gym, but listening to your personal life is annoying for those around you. If you need to take a call, step away from the weight room or take it in the hallway.
14. Chalk Explosions
Using so much chalk that it looks like a blizzard hit the platform without cleaning it up afterward is a major headache for the gym staff. You likely enjoy the extra grip, but leaving a dusty mess for the next person is pretty inconsiderate. Being mindful of how much you use and wiping down the bar shows that you’re a responsible member of the community.
15. The Tripod Takeover
Unpacking a full-blown camera and tripod in the middle of a busy room isn’t exactly convenient for others. While you may be trying to get that one funny angle to post online, you should realize you’re in a public area. Others should not have to worry about stumbling into your shot.
16. Challenging Someone for "Your" Spot
Getting mad because your gym crush happened to be on your favorite machine is incredibly ridiculous. You never negotiated a contract with that specific squat rack just because you worked out at the gym before it. Learning how to switch up your workout when someone is already using your preferred equipment shows humility.
17. Slamming Weights Unnecessarily
Dropping your dumbbells from the height of your waist after every single exercise isn’t necessary and annoys those around you. You think it looks cool and makes you look strong. But all it does is damage the gym floor and make your lifting sessions sound excessive.
18. Staying Past Closing Time
Trying to squeeze in a few more exercises when the staff has clearly closed is beyond selfish. You may think your workout is more important than their lives. But making someone stay late just to lock up after you is rude.
19. Stealing Plates From an Active Bar
Taking weight plates off a rack where someone is clearly still working is a huge violation of the unspoken gym code. You should always ask if someone is finished with the weights before you start stripping their bar for your own use. Assuming that whatever isn't currently in someone’s hands is yours for the taking creates a very tense atmosphere.
20. Locker Room Grooming Marathons
Taking up three sinks to do a full shaving and skincare routine while others are waiting to wash their hands is a classic entitled behavior. You should be mindful of how much space you’re occupying in shared facilities, especially during the morning rush. Being efficient with your grooming helps ensure that everyone can get in and out efficiently.
