Don't Be "That Guy": The 10 Dos & 10 Don'ts Of Gym Etiquette

Don't Be "That Guy": The 10 Dos & 10 Don'ts Of Gym Etiquette

How To Work On Your Gains Without Losing Friends In The Process

Whether you're new to the gym or a seasoned gym rat, there are some spoken and unspoken rules you should be aware of. The gym is a shared space, and you're sometimes working out in close proximity to others, so getting on someone's nerves is easy to do. While you shouldn't feel like you're walking on eggshells, some small adjustments to your behavior and an overall courteous and considerate attitude go a long way. Here are 10 dos and 10 don'ts of gym etiquette so you don't end up being the target of everyone's silent glares.

1. Wipe-Down Equipment

Keep in mind the gym is a shared space. Even if you were only on it for a minute, wipe down every piece of equipment after using it as a courtesy to others.

2. Put Weights Back

Don't assume someone's going to do it for you. Put your weights back on the rack where you found them after you're done. It's the considerate thing to do.

3. Get To Fitness Classes on Time

You won't be making any yoga friends if you're the one walking in late, disrupting the zen vibes just as everyone is getting their namaste on. It's disruptive, rude, and easily avoidable.

4. Respect Personal Space

Even though the gym is a shared space and, where appropriate, can be a good place to meet new people and form a community, boundaries should still be respected. Make sure to maintain a safe distance from others while using equipment or taking breaks to avoid people's personal space.

5. Follow Time Limits

Those signs that say "30 minutes maximum" are there for a reason. Respect them, especially if it's a busy day and there's a queue.

6. Share Equipment

Don't forget that the gym is a shared space. When you're taking a longer break, get up off the machine to let someone else use it. Always be mindful of your surroundings and take note if it looks like someone else is waiting for the piece of equipment you're using.

7. Use Headphones

There's nothing more annoying than someone who plays audio without headphones at the gym. No one wants to hear your music. Bring headphones, and if you forget them, forego the music.

8. Dress Appropriately

Many gyms have a dress code and won't accept you if you come in jeans or don't wear a shirt. This isn't just the gym being stingy, but it's to make other gym-goers feel more comfortable.

9. Offer Help When Needed

While you shouldn't go around acting like a know-it-all, if it looks like someone could use a spotter or isn't familiar with a certain machine, it's appreciated to offer help. Just make sure you're not overstepping and that your help is actually wanted.

10. Always Ask

If you want to transfer weights from one machine to another or want to use a machine that someone else might be using, always play it safe and ask before going ahead and doing it. When in doubt, it's always appreciated to do the courteous thing.

Now that we've covered the dos of gym etiquette, let's talk about the unspoken don'ts.

1. Don't Give Unsolicited Advice

While it's nice and courteous to offer help when needed, there's a difference between this and giving unsolicited advice. Although you may just be trying to help, it comes off as condescending and can embarrass or stress out the person you're talking to.

2. Don't Flirt

This seems like it should go without saying, but in case it isn't, the gym is not a bar. It's not a place people want to be flirted with, especially if they're actively in the middle of a set or intense cardio workout.

3. Don't Drop Weights Loudly

It can happen by accident sometimes, but if you're routinely dropping weights loudly after every set, it's extremely disruptive to everyone around. Setting them down with control is a good practice for you, too.

4. Don't Stare

Staring is rude anywhere, but it can make people especially uncomfortable in gym environments while they're physically exerting themselves to the max. Don't freak people out; keep your focus on yourself.

5. Don't Circuit Hog

Circuit hogging is when you monopolize multiple pieces of equipment because they're all part of your circuit workout. Pick one at a time and don't lollygag if others are waiting.

6. Don't Leave A Mess

This is an obvious one, but needs to be stated anyway. Don't leave your towel, water bottle, or used paper towels or wipes lying around. Clean up after yourself.

7. Don't Talk On The Phone or Film Others

Be mindful of your phone use while at the gym. While it's okay if you need to take a call, keep it brief and don't talk too loudly. You also shouldn't take videos or pictures of people without their permission, even if they're just in the background of yours.

8. Don't Block Someone's View

The mirrors are there for everyone. While it may be difficult sometimes, as mirror space quickly becomes overcrowded, try not to walk in front of someone and block their view.

9. Don't Grunt Excessively

It's normal to make some noise while you're exerting yourself, but try not to be too loud. The gym is a shared space, and your grunts are disruptive. If you feel the need to yell, it's a sign you're trying to lift too much weight anyway.

10. Don't Work Out In Large Groups

Group classes are one thing, but going to the gym with all your bros is another thing entirely. You might be someone who feels more motivated working out with people, and that's cool, but working out in a group of four or more is a huge no-no.
